Section 19 – Dewey, Brace, Bump

Written by Sandy Kinter, from Waterford Genealogical Society E-Newsletter Volume 14 Number 2

Section 19 is bounded on the west by Williams Lake Road, on the south by Elizabeth Lake Road, and on the east by Hospital Road. Pontiac Lake Road angles diagonally across the northern half of the section, from Williams Lake Road to Hospital Road. Today is it still largely residential and quiet, except for the occasional roar of a jet plane taking off from Oakland County International Airport, just to
the north.

The Dewey Family
Levi Dewey and Amanda Brace
Leman Lorenzo Dewey and Charlotte Sophia Bump

Recorded consecutively in the 1870 census for Waterford Township, on page 594 are two Dewey families. The first family is that of Leeman Dewey, age 37, born in Michigan; Sophia, age 29, born in New York; and children, Julia, age 11, Martha, age 9, Eva, age 7, Flora, age 4, and Della, age 2, all born in Michigan. Also recorded with the family is Wesley Bump, age 34, born in New York. The second family is Levi Dewey, age 76, born in Vermont, Amanda, age 68, born in New York, and Isaac, age 24, born in Michigan. Mary Gideons, age 13, born in Michigan, is residing with the Dewey family. The 1872 plat map shows only L. Dewey who owns a 107 acre farm in the northwest corner of Section 19.

Leman Lorenzo Dewey was born 16 April 1833, in Oakland County, Michigan, the son of Levi Dewey and Amanda Brace. (1)(2)(4) He died 23 October 1891, in White Lake Township, Oakland County (3), and is buried in the Lakeview Cemetery, Clarkston, Michigan. (4) Leman married Charlotte Sophia Bump, 3 February 1858, in Oakland County. (5) The Wesley Bump who is residing with Leman and Sophia in the 1870 census, is Sophia’s brother, Charles Wesley Bump. (6) During the Civil War, Leman served in the 7th and 5th Michigan Cavalry. Heapplied for a pension in 1880 and Sophia applied for a widow’s pension on 4 December 1891. (7)

Levi Dewey, father of Leman, was born 17 September 1793, in Vermont. (1)(8) He was the son of Apollos Dewey and Matilda Pond. (1) Levi died 14 Jan 1875, in Oakland County. (8) He is buried in the Waterford Center Cemetery. (8) The Dewey family history says that Levi had resided near Buffalo, New York, and had married Amanda Brace, in 1821, in New York. (1) Levi and family had moved to Michigan between 1827 and 1833. The death certificate of daughter, Julia A. Kelly, says she was born 6 October 1827, in New York (9), and son Leman was born in 1833, in Oakland County. (1) In the 1840 census, Levi Dewey is recorded on page 119, Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan. Levi’s wife, Amanda Brace, died 28 October 1870 and she is buried with Levi in the Waterford Center Cemetery. (8) Her parents are unknown. After Amanda’s death Levi married secondly, Loretta (Black) Vantine, 9 April 1872, in Oakland County. (10) Loretta died 19 Jun 1876. (8) She is buried in the Waterford Center Cemetery with her first husband, Jacob Vantine. (8)

The father of Levi, Apollos Dewey, was born 12 December 1764, in Hebron, Connecticut. (1) He died 5 July 1837 and is buried in the Paint Creek Cemetery, Lake Orion, Oakland County. Apollos married Matilda Pond, 1 February 1785, in Keene, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire. (12) Matilda was the daughter of Jonathan and Thankful Pond, born 3 October 1764, in Keene, New Hampshire. (13) She died 20 January 1833, in Oakland County, and is buried in the Paint Creek Cemetery, Lake Orion. (11) The Dewey family history can be traced back to Thomas Dewey who settled in Windsor, Connecticut in the 1630’s. (1)

Charlotte Sophia Bump was born 2 November 1840, in New York, the daughter of Benjamin Bump and Asenath Jones. (14)(15) She died 9 November 1915 in Clarkston, Michigan. (14) C. Sophia Dewey is buried in the Lakeview Cemetery, Clarkston. (14) Benjamin and Asenath are found in the 1850 census, page 76, Town of Cazenovia, Madison County, New York. Sometime before the 1860 census the family had moved to Michigan. The widowed Benjamin Bump is found in the 1860 census, page 213, White Lake, Oakland County, Michigan. Asenath had died 14 November 1859 and is buried in the Waterford Center Cemetery, Waterford. (8) The cemetery entry for Asenath says she had died in Genesee County, Michigan. (8) But Asenath appears in the 1860 Mortality Schedule, page 6, White Lake, Oakland County, Michigan. This reports that Cena Bump, age 48, died in White Lake, November 1859, from consumption. Asenath was the daughter of Samuel Jones and Tabitha Bishop. (16)(17) Samuel Jones was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, serving from New London County, Connecticut. (17)

Benjamin Bump was born in 1812, New York. (18) After the death of Asenath, Benjamin married secondly, Ernestine (Persons) Newall, date unknown. (18)(20)(21) Benjamin died 8 October 1870, in Clayton, Genesee County, Michigan. (19) He is buried in the Cronk Cemetery, Genesee County. (18) Although it could not be confirmed with online sources, Benjamin is very probably the son of William Bump and Charlotte Potter.
