Section 6 – Struble, Daugherty

Written by Sandy Kinter, from Waterford Genealogical Society E-Newsletter Volume 18 Number 12

Robert Struble
Delia Daugherty

Most of Section 6 is covered by Maceday Lake. J. Baker in the northwestern corner is John Baker who resided in Independence Township. H. Huntoon, or Horace Huntoon, is reported with the Huntoon family in Section 8. Below the property owned by J. Baker is a forty-acre parcel owned by F.W. It could not be determined who was F.W. The only shown residence in the whole section is that of Mrs. Struble on the southside of Maceday Lake Road.

The 1870 census of Waterford Township, page 596, reports that Mrs. Struble is Delia Stroules (sic), age 57, born in Pennsylvania.

She owns $3,000 worth of real estate, but her occupation is given as “Keeping house”. In the Struble household are Susan, age 27, born in New Jersey; Joseph, age 25, born in New Jersey; Mary, age 23, born in ohio; Sarah J., age 19, born in Ohio; and Barbara, age 17, born in Illinois. Then comes Luke O. Losey, age 7, born in Michigan; Charles Terry, age 20, born in Michigan; and John Terry, age 25, born in Berne, Switzerland. Luke O. Losey was a grandson of Delia Struble. His mother was Catherine Struble, wife of Amzy P. Losey, married 4 October 1856, in Oakland County. (10) Catherine had died 28 February 1863. (8)

Robert Struble married Delia Daugherty, 26 November 1834 in Sussex County, New Jersey. (1) The 1830 census shows many Struble families in Sussex County and it could not be determined which one was the family of Robert Struble. This was the same story for Delia Daugherty/Dougherty. There are four Dougherty families in Sussex County in the 1830 census.

The 1840 census reports Robert Struble is residing in Hardisten Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. (2) By The 1850 census the Struble family has moved to Coshocton County, Ohio. Daughter Susan, age 9, was born in Ohio, so the family had moved there about 1841. (3) Robert Struble and family are residents of Waterford Township in the 1860 census. (4) In 1860, Robert’s two youngest children, Sarah, age 8 and Lilla, age 6, were both born in Illinois. The first record of Robert Struble in Waterford County is a deed dated 1 March 1858, when he is purchasing the property in Section 6. (5)

Robert Struble died 24 July 1864, in Oakland County, Michigan. (6) He is buried in the Case Cemetery, Clarkston, Oakland County, Michigan. (9) Delia Struble died 15 July 1874, in Waterford Township, Oakland County, Michigan. (7)(8) The death record states she was aged 62 years, 2 months, and 10 days at her death. If this is correct, then Delia was born 5 May 1812. Delia’s Find A Grave entry says she was born 15 November 1810, in Vermont. But the Oakland County death records say she was born in New Jersey, and this agrees with most of Delia’s census records, except for the 1870 census. The Find A Grave entry also states that Robert Struble died in New Jersey, but Oakland County probate records proves this is incorrect. (6) Delia Struble is buried in the Case Cemetery, Clarkston, Oakland County, Michigan. (8)
